Sabelo Mkhaliphi is a self-taught artist from Soweto. African black women and girls are his muse and his agenda. With realism as his approach, using smooth textures and vibrant colours, he creates portraits of African black women and girls adorned in beads, necklaces, silver, diamonds and gold. This is to symbolize their beauty and the powerful cultural significance and heritage of African jewellery. With his art, Mkhaliphi highlights the social and political plights of the African black woman and girl child and advocates for awareness, equality and justice on their behalf.
