The Rise of African Design and Taking African Jewellery Global — Lusanda Omelo
Lusanda Omelo is an up and coming entrepreneur at the forefront of the demand for authentic African products — in particular fashion accessories such as jewellery. We spoke to Lusanda to understand her dreams and what makes life tick for her and her brand, LuOme.
LO: Thanks! It’s so encouraging to see how African designs specifically South Africa, bring their narrative to the Luxury fashion world. For a long time Europe has set trends, which we would ultimately follow, now the tables seem to be turning, fast.
AM: Good point. We see signs of African influence across the globe…
LO: Yes! You can see it with Stella McCartney’s spring 2018 runway show featuring Ankara material.
And of course the well talked about Louis Vuitton Basotho blanket jackets.
LO: South Africa has a wealth of rich culture and awesome diversity that can & should be shared with the rest of the world, by its people. There’s raw talent and skill that needs to harnessed, packaged & interpreted into what the whole world can appreciate without dismissing our culture. As the world evolves we have to evolve with it, to avoid finding our stories being told by observers.
LO: True. As international luxury brands come to our shores, they should and will find us ready to create partnerships that enhance what exists.
AM: And the way forward?
AmAfrikan is at the heart of this, allowing all Africans to tell their stories through craft and skill. Each crafter comes with an authentic African story that enlightens our hearts and remind us how beautiful Africa is.
AM: Thanks Lusanda. Did we mention we love your work?
LO: Yes, but of course you can say it however many times you want!
