What does it mean to be African? Tumisho Masha takes us on a journey through his mind and history of Africa and its exciting prospects. From a global cultural influence to technological innovations, Masha explores the edges of the African identity and how it has shaped to a global culture.
This is Africa and what a place it is! The mere thought of Africa and her treasures stir up exhilarating thoughts of adventure and wanderlust in me. Africa has always been a place of huge contradictions, from mystery and romance to the horrors of war and human depravity. Populated with the original thinking man, the homo sapiens, Africans developed civilisation, art, music, science and mathematics. Presently Africa is poised to be at the cutting edge once again of a new industrial revolution and renaissance. With huge leaps in innovative technology and manufacturing capability aided by a boom in commodity prices and an invigorated leadership. The continent seems ready to come out of decades of post colonial arrested development and administrative delinquency. The time has never been better for a shift in the African psyche, how Africans see themselves and their potential to lead on a global scale.
There is no doubt that Africa possesses an abundance of gifted artists, artisans, craftsmen and innovators. However showcasing the work of our talented creatives in a place of prominence has always been an African oversight. Art is the window of a people’s soul and make no mistake we got soul aplenty. Perhaps that is why we take our art so much for granted, it’s every where we look around us, it has always been with us and it just seems to come so naturally to us. The sway of African bodies moving to a hypnotic beat pulsating with the rhythm of time. The mastery of man over his material to bend steel and stone to his will to create a masterpiece. The melodious voices of an African choir that can enchant the soul of the hardest heart to weep with joy. The work of carpenters and cobblers, jewellers and fashion designers, artists and innovators all placed in a menagerie of the sublime. These are the treasures we bring to you. Carefully curated and lovingly packaged to be delivered straight to you, right at your door.
We have the power to shape the future that was the dreams of those who came before us. We have the will to break the chains of economic exclusion and create prosperity for all. We carry with us the indomitable spirit of Nelson and Winnie, the voice of Masekela and Makeba, the free spirit of Kerkorrel and the black butterflies of Jonker. We are beautiful and majestic, the kings and queens of Africa. We are born of a people, members of a global village filled with the humanity of ubuntu. We are you and we are me.
